Ringing scheme and monitoring bird migration in Antikythera island

Description:

The island is characterised by an important flow of migratory birds in spring and autumn, including a major migration route of raptors and by the presence of one of the largest colonies of Eleonora’s Falcon in the world. The focus of this observatory is the study of migration of smaller birds, by mist-netting and ringing, monitoring of raptor migration, training ringers and studying and safeguarding the falcon colony.

Plane to Athens or Crete, boat to Antikythera

Qualifications:

Mainly Ringers with licence A,B,C, and birdwatchers with special knowledge on raptor identification.

Work:

Ringing, min 150 metres mist nets, point count migration monitoring, monitoring of falcon colony.

Accommodation:

In a Bird observatory station which also hosts volunteers, with beds, kitchen, bathroom in common room.

Cost:

50 EUR participation fee. Travel and food are covered by volunteers
