Ecology and Conservation of Deer in Patagonia, Argentina
Description:
The project objectives are to estimate population density and determine the reproductive status, health condition, predation by puma and habitat use of red deer in southern Patagonia. Population surveys of endangered deer are conducted as well.Species:
Andean huemul deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus), exotic red deer (Cervus elaphus).Habitat:
Mountainous temperate rainforest and edge of steppe.Location:
Southwest Argentina.Travel:
Airplane to Buenos Aires or Santiago, Chile, then airplane or bus to Bariloche.Duration:
3 - 4 weeks2–5 weeks.

Good backpacking and camping experience in mountainous wilderness.Work:
Herd counts, radio-telemetry work of red deer, habitat surveys, morphometric analysis, use of topographic maps and GPS units. Observations with binoculars and scopes. A telemetry study on predation by puma is pending fundingLanguage(s):
English or Spanish (German also spoken).Accommodation:
Sleeping bags and tents during field work. Hostel in town.Cost:
