Description:

We work mainly with Spectacled flying foxes and their habitat, but are also involved in education and research. Volunteers are especially welcome October to February when up to 500 orphan come into care, a result of tick paralysis in the mothers. We have excellent facilities for the rehabilitation of microbats and megabats.

Species:

Four species of flying fox - Spectacled, Little Red, Black and Grey-headed; up to 10 species of microbats

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest.

Location:

Atherton, near Cairns, Australia.

Travel:

Airplane to Cairns, then bus to Atherton.

Duration:

3 - 4 weeks

Minimum 4 weeks in busy season; 1 week for rest of year.

Period:

Year round but especially October - February.

Long Term:

A stay of 2-3 months in the busy season is welcome.

Volunteers Age:

ND

Qualifications:

Ability to work in teams for long hours. Experience with bats not necessary, though experience with wildlife, veterinary or zoo work is a plus. Cooks and Vets welcome.

Work:

Searching the colony daily for tick paralysis bats; hospital treatments; caring for orphans; preparing food for adults and babies; cleaning; washing; cooking; weighing and measuring bats

Language(s):

English necessary.

Accommodation:

Single, twin or triple room available. Bush shelters with tents. Some form of ‘soft volunteering’ is possible where people can pay more and work less.

Cost:

AUS$30-50 per day for food, accommodation, internet, laundry.
