DESCRIPTION: The goal of this
project is the care of 50 seal pups every year with a variety of problems.
Most of the seals that come into the centre have been separated from their
mothers before they are able to survive on their own. Others are injured
by discarded fishing nets or have been injured by gun shot.
SPECIES: Marine mammals: grey
seals Halichoerus grypus and Common or Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina).
HABITAT: Marine/Coastal.
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: Northern
Islands of Scotland.
TRAVEL INFORMATION: By airplane
to London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness or Aberdeen. Then bus or train
by sea from Thurso or from Aberdeen to Orkney.
DURATION: Min. 4 weeks.
PERIOD: Year round except April
and May.
AGE: Min18.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: A
strong motivationin with animals. No previous experience is required.
VOLUNTEERS WORK: Volunteers
are expected to help with the cleaning, food preparation, and feeding of
seals at the centre. They can also be involved in the rescue and release
of seals. Volunteers are expected to participate in cooking (vegetarian)
and housecleaning activities.
LANGUAGE: English.
ACCOMMODATION: The accommodation
is shared in a house with 2 attic bedrooms with bathroom and toilet.
COST: GB£15—20/week (approx.EUR/US$22—30)
for the cost of food.
LONG TERM: Possible.

NOTES: The work at Orkney Seal
Rescue can at times be wet and cold with long hours. It is a very rewarding
job especially when the seals are released back into the wild.
